BOOK BRIEFS
Author: Katie Gutierrez
Genre: Fiction Suspense. On my page its category is Dramarama
Setting: Southern Texas: Laredo, Austin. Mexico City.
More Than You’ll Ever Know is Katie Gutierrez’ debut novel. It has been classified as a suspense thriller, and I guess that’s right, but in my opinion it’s really a family saga on steroids, on two fronts.
The novel follows the lives of its two main characters, Dolores (Lore) and Cassie. Both of them have challenging histories and though their lives don’t mirror each other, nor intersect, they emotionally converge.
Though this is a fictional story, it makes for great true crime fodder. If you’re a true crime junkie you will find this story enticing enough that it will make you wonder how this is not real. I’m not saying any more than that. You have to read it.
At the beginning Lore and Cassie’s relationship is a bit conflictive but they make it work. Each one has personal motives, and in the end their individual pain will bind them in some ways. In fact, Lore becomes somewhat maternal towards Cassie and her current challenges.
Though I’m not very fond of the” back and forth timelines” Katie Gutierrez did a masterful job at pulling it off. I also have to say, her descriptions are superb. After I was halfway through the novel I started thinking back to the beginning, and to a picture she describes in it. I was certain I had actually seen the photograph. I almost went back to check if it was in the book, it was so vivid for me. I clearly remember it, like if it’d actually seen it on an internet site.
“More than You’ll Ever Know” has enough twists and turns to keep you occupied and interested. It doesn’t disappoint.
