Texas Argues Parts of New ‘Book Rating’ Law Should Be Allowed to Take Effect In a filing late last week, attorneys for the state renewed their broader bid to stay the court’s August 31 preliminary injunction blocking HB 900 from taking effect, but also argue that parts of the law are outside the scope of the plaintiffs’ claims and should be allowed to take effect.
Amazon Issues New AI Guidelines for Its KDP Platform. Big Ten Academic Alliance launches its first Big Ten Open Books collection
The first 100-title collection centered on Gender and Sexuality studies is now published. The works included in the collection have all been previously published in print by the partnering university presses and are now being made openly available in digital form to read and reuse at no cost.
As Schools start, banning books in NC heats up – Durham Public Schools librarian Michelle Burton says despite the fact that most children attending the state’s public schools are Black and Latinx, conservative parents and activists are fighting to restrict access to books written by authors of color and members of the LGBTQ community. With more than 25 years experience as a media specialist she considers book bans would work in the past, but technology begs to differ. “Trying to censure every little bit of reading materials that come into the library is going to be ineffective because our kids have the internet, they have YouTube,” Burton said.
What’s not to like?
Illustrated Book on Owners and their Service Dogs– There are many types of service dogs and Anjali Edwards, a graduate of Wright State University, wrote and illustrated a book about them. “A lot of people know about service dogs who are for veterans with PTSD and guide dogs for the blind or vision impaired,” said Edwards, “But I wanted to raise awareness of other service dogs. I wanted to show that people of all different ages and backgrounds and many different types of disabilities can have a service dog.” The Title of the book is: “It Takes Two to Make a Team: How Service Animals can Change the Lives of their Handlers.”
